Voss 2013 comes to an end
Featuring 375 athletes from 35 nations and 12 medal events over the course of one week, the 2013 Voss/Oslo FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships were an absolute bonanza for fans of Freestyle Skiing with outstanding competitions.
Things got off to a great start with the halfpipe event held under the lights in the superpipe at Oslo Vinterpark, just outside the Norwegian capital on 5th March. The general consensus is that it was one of the most intense and progressive halfpipe events of the season, with Virginie Faivre (SUI) and David Wise (USA) claiming the first gold medals of the Championships.
Then, attention shifted 400km to the north-west, where moguls competitions kicked off the Voss-Myrkdalen portion of the event on 6th March. Under sunny skies that would miraculously bless nearly every hour of competition, moguls heavyweights Hannah Kearney (USA) and Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) nailed the titles in a thrilling final. For Kearney it was her second World Championship title, after 2005, while for 20-year-old Kingsbury it was the first of what may be many more gold medals. In the dual moguls on Friday, Chloe Dufour-Lapointe (CAN) claimed the ladies' top prize. On the men's side, a showdown between Kingsbury and 2010 Olympic champion Alex Bilodeau (CAN) saw the latter skier claim his third-consecutive dual moguls gold.
In between the moguls competitions, on Thursday, 7th March, the Myrkdalen Freestyle arena saw the aerials competition get way off the ground. Chinese athletes have dominated the event on the World Cup and in an action-packed title event, they continued such form with Mengtao Xu winning the ladies’ gold whilst the men's title went to Guangpu Qi.
On Saturday, 9th March, the second of the two 'new school' events that will soon see their Olympic debut was carried out as the slopestyle athletes took to air in Myrkdalen. The size and scope of the World Champs course demanded absolute control and commitment, and many top skiers were challenged to throw down a clean run in the two-run finals. At the end, it was Kaya Turski (CAN) and Tom Wallisch (USA) who claimed the respective ladies' and men's titles.
On Sunday, 10th March, ski cross qualifications and finals were packed into the ultimate day of the 2013 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships. On the ladies' side, the most dominant ski cross athlete of the year, Fanny Smith (SUI), took gold while Jean Frederic Chapuis (FRA) claimed the title in the men’s event.
Overall, Canada was the most successful nation taking home 10 medals (4 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze), closely trailed by the United States which had one gold medal less but 10 medals as well (3 gold, 1 silver, 6 bronze) in total, followed by China with 3 medals (2 gold, 1 bronze).
