Ski Jumping World Cup gets in swing in Lillehammer
On 23rd November, the first day of the 2012/13 season already offered a real highlight for the Ski Jumping fans: the mixed team competition had its World Cup premiere on the normal hill in Lillehammer (NOR).
The new format, in which a team is represented by two male and two female jumpers, was already tested in summer and proved to be a great success among athletes and spectators alike. Despite heavy gusts of wind, the competition turned out to be extremely exciting and the Norwegian team celebrated well-deserved success ahead of Japan and Italy.
On the second competition day the temperatures got colder in the 1994 Olympic city and also the wind conditions were easier which ensured a smooth start for the first individual competitions.
On the men’s side, the normal hill competition turned out to be a close fight at a very high level. After a first round lead by newcomer Andreas Wellinger, victory was claimed by Germany’s Severin Freund who celebrated his third World Cup win. Thomas Morgenstern (AUT) and last year's overall winner Anders Bardal (NOR) ranked second and third.
On 25th November, the men's individual competition on the large hill again took place in perfect conditions. Austria’s Gregor Schlierenzauer was the champion of the day with the tiny margin of 0.1 points ahead of Anders Fannemel (NOR) and Thomas Morgenstern (AUT). After Schlierenzauer finished eighth the previous day, he celebrated his 41st time on Sunday. "41 World Cup victories sounds much, I don't feel that old. But I'm totally satisfied, especially because normally I don't do that well at the beginning of the season", he claimed.
The ladies started their second World Cup season with a record number of 60 participants in the qualification round and Japan’s Sara Takanashi was crowned the first World Cup winner of the new season. Second and third place went to last year's overall World Cup champion Sarah Hendrickson (USA) and local hero Anette Sagen (NOR). "This was a perfect weekend for me. On the first day I was very happy about the podium finish with my team and this time I'm on top. Now I’m looking forward to the next competitions in Sochi", Takanashi said.
While the men’s World Cup tour will continue from 30th November to 1st December in Kuusamo (FIN), the ladies will be moving on to Sochi (RUS) where the men’s tour will join them for the next competitions from 8th to 9th December.
