Alpine Skiing: Shiffrin and Hirscher crowned Zagreb queen and king

Alpine Skiing: Shiffrin and Hirscher crowned Zagreb queen and king

US young gun Mikaela Shiffrin and Austrian super talent Marcel Hirscher were victorious in Zagreb (CRO), where two of the most prestigious slalom races of the season were staged on 4th and 6th January 2013.

Less than two weeks after celebrating her maiden Audi FIS Ski World Cup victory in Are (SWE), 17-year-old Shiffrin confirmed her class in front of 8,000 spectators as she finished over a second ahead of Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter and Canada’s Erin Mielzynski.

On the men’s side, Hirscher was the first man to win two consecutive slalom races in Zagreb, leaving Sweden’s Andre Myhrer and his team mate Mario Matt more than half a second behind. The Austrian has a perfect streak of placing on the podium in every single World Cup technical race this season.

In Zagreb, traditionally, the winners receive a crystal crown along with a cloak and the chance to sit on a throne like a real queen or king which Shiffrin and Hirscher greatly enjoyed.

Shiffrin reclaimed the red slalom World Cup leader’s jersey, and also has a solid lead in the Longines Rising Ski Star ranking with 426 points.
On the men’s side, Hirscher leads the FIS overall World Cup ranking with 740 points ahead of Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal (689) and Ted Ligety (552) of the United States.

The next Audi FIS Ski World Cup events will be taking place on 12th and 13th January in St. Anton (AUT) with downhill and super-G races for the ladies and in Adelboden (SUI) with giant slalom and slalom events for the men.
