Liberec hosted successful Nordic Junior & U-23 Cross-Country World Championships
The FIS Nordic Junior and U-23 Cross-Country World Ski Championships were successfully held from 20th-27th January 2013 in Liberec (CZE).
Already for the second time, Liberec welcomed the world’s best Nordic skiers. Perfect snow conditions at the World Championships 2009 venues with well-prepared courses and ski jumps welcomed almost 650 athletes and 371 team members and a grand total of 21 gold medals were awarded.
In the overall medal table, the clear dominator was Russia which claimed whopping 6 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 5 bronze medals. Germany in 2nd position collected 5 gold medals, whilst Slovenia finished in 3rd place with 3 gold medals.
The prestigious Marc Hodler Trophy awarded to the best nation in the junior events was won by Germany. The award, named after Marc Hodler, former President of the International Ski Federation, is awarded to the team that participates in all disciplines and collects the most points for ranking in 1st to 10th positions. The award was presented in the Vesec venue by Ulrich Wehling, FIS Technical Expert.
After the closing ceremony which took place in Vesec with a procession of flag-bearers representing all national teams, Roman Kumpošt, FIS Council Member and President of the JWSC 2013 Organising Committee, addressed the competitors and the members of the organising teams in the name of the FIS: “I would like to congratulate everyone who won a medal at these championships. It is a great reward for your hard work and conscientious preparation. To those for whom it did not work out as they expected, I would like to tell you not to lose your motivation, but on the contrary, to increase your efforts, because your chance will surely come soon. And to all of you together, I wish you to keep your great attitude to skiing – one of the most beautiful sports,” he said in his speech.
At the end, the FIS flag was taken over by the representatives of the Italian resort Val di Fiemme, where the next FIS Nordic Junior & U23 World Ski Championships will be held in 2014.
