Schladming 2013 in full swing

Schladming, Austria, is currently in the spotlight of the sporting world’s attention with the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in full swing in the heart of Styria. Seven out of 11 medal events have been decided, seeing both some great surprise winners and well-known champions on the podium.

France’s Marion Rolland was one of the surprises. Never scoring a World Cup victory, she nailed the gold medal in the ladies’ downhill on 10th February. After a rather weak World Cup season by her standardss, Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch returned to the top of the podium by clinching gold in super combined on 8th February, in addition to claiming bronze in the downhill.

On the men’s side, Ted Ligety (USA) stormed to victory in the opening men’s super-G and then went on to seal his second gold in the super combined on 11th February. Meanwhile, Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR) dominated the men’s downhill two days before and became the only skier to have won a gold medal in four consecutive FIS Alpine World Ski Championships: Are (SWE; 2 gold medals), Val d’Isère (FRA), Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) and now Schladming.

Next to the individual events, Austria finally won its first gold medal in Schladming in a spectacular team event on 12th February to the great joy of more than 15,500 cheering fans on-site. “This was amazing! I am really happy I could be part of this team event and get a first taste of the terrific atmosphere here in Schladming,” said local hero and top favourite for the technical events, Marcel Hirscher.

In the medals table, the United States have the lead (2 gold, 1 bronze), ahead of France (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) and Slovenia (1 gold, 1 silver).

The action will continue until 17th February with the technical events in giant slalom and slalom still to be staged for both ladies and men. For the men, a qualification race will be held for giant slalom and slalom due to the large number of entries.
