Sierra Nevada, Spain - 2017 Candidate FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Ski Championships

Sierra Nevada, Spain - 2017 Candidate FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Ski Championships

Located in the south of Spain, the Sierra Nevada belongs to the region of Andalusia in the province of Granada. The organization of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996 was the final feather in the cap that set Sierra Nevada up as a reference internationally for hosting large-scale sports events. In addition, it is the first Spanish resort in terms of turnover and the organization of international events in Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing.

The competition facilities for the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard events were completed in their entirety in summer 2011 with the construction of the half pipe installations. The Sierra Nevada Candidature for the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships 2017 now draws on a wealth of experience in the organization of international competitions.

Next to a fully financed competition infrastructure, the concept features a test event plan which includes the 2012 FIS Junior Snowboard World Championships and the Grand Final 2013 in Freestyle Skiing and  Snowboarding, as well as a specific plan to promote Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding events.

For Sierra Nevada, the Candidature represents an opportunity in terms of image with benefits for the sport installations and economic activity of the resort, as well as the surrounding area taken as a whole.
