Nordic Junior & U23 Worlds to kick off in Liberec: 630 athletes from 36 countries

Nordic Junior & U23 Worlds to kick off in Liberec: 630 athletes from 36 countries

On 14th January, the FIS Nordic Junior & U23 World Ski Championships Organising Committee announced the latest numbers of 994 participants coming to Liberec for the junior highlight of the season. In less than a week, 630 athletes from 36 countries, accompanied by 364 other members of the respective sports teams will be competing in the venues in Vesec and on Ještěd.

Important tests of venues

A week before the start of the Championships, the Cross-Country venue in Vesec was tested by the senior world elite as part of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup on 12th and 13th January.

On both days of the weekend, the races were run on a well-prepared 800m circuit, which was especially appreciated by the spectators as they were in continuous visual contact with the sprinters and could enjoy their fight for the podium spots.

On 11th and 12th January, also the HS 100 ski jumping hill on Ještěd underwent an important test before the start of the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships.

“Among other reasons, we chose to hold the competition under artificial lighting not only to test the ski-jumping hill itself but also the technical equipment. We are fully prepared for the Championships.” said Jiří Erben, the manager of the Ještěd venue.

Grand opening show

The official opening of the FIS Nordic Junior & U23 World Ski Championships in Liberec is taking place on Monday, 21st January. On the stroke of eight in the evening, Dr. Edvard Beneš Square will see the line-up of all teams, attractive dance shows and a special performance by historical skiers to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Czech Ski Association.

The subsequent programme will be left to a group of 40 skiers in historical costumes, who will show the best of their skiing skills. In this original way, the ceremonial participants and spectators will take part in the celebrations for the 110th anniversary of the Czech Ski Association – the world’s oldest Ski Organisation. The opening ceremony will conclude with a performance by the A-Styl dance group and a seven-minute firework.
