Fast action at FIS Speed Skiing World Championships in Vars

With 30 centimetres of fresh snow, the official Opening Ceremony of the FIS Speed Skiing World Championships in Vars (FRA) took place on 20th January featuring a team parade through the streets of Vars, a dance show and an official reception of the athletes and teams.

After four runs on the impressively steep slope comprising an average drop of 52.5 %, Simone Origone (ITA) and Sanna Tidstrand (SWE) are currently the fastest in the Speed One competitions reaching 216.48 and 209.27 kilometres per hour. Greggio Valentina Greggio (ITA) and Gregory Meichtry (SUI) have taken the first positions in the Speed downhill events with 182.91 and 191.94 kilometres per hour respectively. On the Junior side, Tiphaine Beaumont (FRA, 168.61) and Erik Backlund (SWE,174.04) are in the lead in the downhill speed events.

Further runs will be staged in the next days followed by the semi-finals on 25th January. The final contests happening on Saturday, 26th January will be crowning the junior and senior Speed Skiing champions in each of the events.
