FIS Snowboard Worlds conclude in Stoneham: 15 nations take home medals, Canada most successful country

The 10th FIS Snowboard World Championships in Stoneham and Quebec City (CAN) wrapped up successfully following the parallel slalom on Sunday, 27th January. Starting off with a massive big air city competition on 19th January, the event came to an end after nine days of full action and sheer excitement.

15 nations were represented at least once at the official prize giving ceremonies, whilst Canada was the most successful nation. Spencer O'Brien and Maelle Ricker became world champions in the ladies’ slopestyle and snowboard cross, while Mark McMorris and Dominique Maltais claimed the silver medals in the men’s slopestyle and ladies’ SBX, respectively.

Meanwhile, Roope Tonteri from Finland was the only athlete to win two titles. The Finnish ripper competed in two contests and came out victorious in both of them. Two others riders also pulled off the feat of placing on the podium twice: Race boarders Amelie Kober from Germany (bronze in parallel giant slalom and parallel slalom) and Roland Fischnaller from Italy (silver in parallel giant slalom and bronze in parallel slalom).

FIS Race Director Uwe Beier addressed his thank you to the Organisers: “We are very pleased with how well the World Championships were organised. Everybody, local Organisers, the hosting National Association and all the 850 volunteers did an excellent job in running a great event. We witnessed high class sports in absolutely fair, sometimes challenging conditions, showcased by truly the best in the world competing in a deep field of riders and also saw well-deserved winners taking home the titles and glory. A big thank you should also be addressed to all the spectators who cheered for the athletes on-site even in freezing cold temperatures.”
