Vars crowns Speed Skiing World Champions

Vars crowns Speed Skiing World Champions

Anne-Liss Pettersen from Norway and Simone Origone from Italy were crowned World Champions in the Speed One event on 26th January in Vars (FRA), with speeds of 221.63 and 240 kilometres per hour by the fastest lady and man.

Next to Speed One where skiers wear aerodynamic helmets and a full body skin tight suit made of latex, the World Championships also staged a downhill competition in which the athletes compete in regular Alpine Skiing outfits.

In this event, Valentina Greggio (198.4 km/h) from Italy Gregory Meichtry (207.4 km/h) from Switzerland claimed victory, while in the junior categories, Britta (169.5 km/h) and Erik Backlund (174.2 km/h) from Sweden raced to the World Championship title.

Throughout eight competition days from 19th to 26th January, the world’s best thrill-seeking skiers gave it their best to reach their maximum speed on the average 52.5% steep slope in the French Southern Alps. After 2009, Vars hosted the FIS Speed Skiing World Championships for the second time.
