Fiemme 2013 in full swing
The 49th edition of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 are in full swing following the official Opening Ceremony on 20th February. The action-packed competitions have been attended by tens of thousands of spectators and accompanied by an exciting side event programme.
“Everything is going well,” stated Pietro De Godenz, President of Fiemme 2013. “Despite the snowfall at the start, we haven’t had any delays or race cancellations.”
During the first four days of the Championships the attendance has been impressive. Almost 120,000 spectators have attended the competitions until Sunday, with over 25,000 at the Cross-Country stadium for the ladies’ and men’s skiathlons and more than 20,000 at the team sprints.
From the 21 medal events on schedule, eight titles have so far been awarded in Cross-Country, two in Nordic Combined and three in Ski Jumping.
The events have seen both well-known and new faces on top of the podiums. Some of them include Marit Bjoergen (NOR) who made history by defending her 2011 victories in both the sprint and skiathlon competitions to increase her number of career World Championship gold medals to ten, and also taking silver in the individual start 10 km race; Dario Cologna (SUI) bringing Switzerland its first ever Cross-Country Skiing gold in Saturday’s skiathlon; Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall giving the United States its first World Championship gold in the Nordic events in the Cross-Country team sprint and the 2011/12 World Cup champion Sarah Hendrickson (USA) claiming the ladies’ Ski Jumping; with defending World Champion Jason Lamy-Chappuis (FRA) sprinting to both individual gold and nailing France’s first team gold in the Nordic Combined team event.
While Norway is currently dominating the medals table in Cross-Country Skiing by a total of 12 medals (4 each), France is leading in Nordic Combined with 2 gold medals, and Japan tops the Ski Jumping medals table with its mixed team gold and ladies’ silver medal thanks to teenage sensation Sara Takanashi and a great team effort in the successful World Championship debut of the mixed team competition.
Beside the athletes and the sport, special attention is being paid to the fans of Nordic Skiing who are visiting the World Championships. The Fiemme 2013 Organising Committee together with the local Tourism Organisation are providing entertainment for visitors of all ages, through a variety of winter- and folk-themed events. A number of artists are raising fan spirit in the different venues to spread excitement through showing the cultural diversity of Val di Fiemme and Italy.
In addition, many personalities have visited the stadiums, including the Norwegian Prime Minister and the Crown Princess of Sweden with the King of Sweden expected to arrive.
