GAP 2011: Less than 100 days to go, commemorative coin & stamp

Just 100 days to go: The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 will officially open on 7th February 2011 at the Olympic ski stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On Saturday, 30th October, the organizers of GAP 2011 celebrated the special milestone of 100 days to go with various activities at the World Championship Pavilion in the pedestrian zone of Garmisch.

As a special project, the organizing team is currently looking for 100 reasons for "My World Ski Championships 2011" together with the population of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The reasons will all have to do with why the community representatives want to attend the World Championships, what they expect from the event, what they associate with the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and why the event will be a real "Festival in the Snow"..

Another major piece of recent news from Garmisch was the unveiling of the commemorative coin and a stamp for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011. The silver coin, as well as a special edition stamp, emphasizes the high significance of the event in Germany. The coin was unveiled by the manager of the German national football team, Oliver Bierhoff, and local ski hero Felix Neureuther. Bierhoff was also the first to receive the commemorative coin of the FIFA World Football Cup in 2006.

Christian Neureuther and Rosi Mittermaier, patrons of GAP 2011, made a significant contribution to the launch of the coin. "I collect coins myself and I wanted Garmisch-Partenkirchen to receive its own currency, but we were late with the applications. I went to see Peer Steinbrück together with my wife Rosi and two weeks later we received a handwritten letter of confirmation", told Christian Neureuther about the new official currency of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

After the Olympic Summer Games in Munich (1972), the Youth and Students World Sports Festival in East Berlin (1973), the Football World Cup (2006) and the World Athletics Championships in Berlin (2009), the coin for GAP 2011 is the fifth for a sporting event in Germany, but the very first for a winter sporting event. The silver coin weighs 18 grams, has a diameter of 32.5 mm and is 2.62 mm thick. It is minted from sterling silver (alloy 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of copper) with the mintmark A (Berlin), D (Munich), F (Stuttgart), G (Karlsruhe) and J (Hamburg).

The commemorative stamp has a value of 55 cents (necessary for a standard letter in Germany) and will have seven million copies. It can be bought starting on November 11th in the branches of the Deutsche Post. The motif of the stamp, also a dynamic skier, was created by Graphic Designer Prof. Heribert Birnbach from Bonn.
