Time for SBX season to start in Lech

Time for SBX season to start in Lech

With all other events in the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup in full swing, it's time for the snowboard crossers to kick off their competition season, too. On 7th and 8th December, Lech am Arlberg (AUT), a first time Snowboard World Cup venue, will host two SBX races. The first will be a calendar highlight as it will be the only snowboard cross held as a night final under floodlights. Just two days later, the race boarders will be hitting the slopes again. Two races, a parallel giant slalom and a parallel slalom, are scheduled in Limone Piemonte (ITA) on 10th and 11th December. These races are the first outdoor races after the season's opening indoors in Landgraaf, The Netherlands.

The World Cup debut of Lech will be a first check of the current form before the FIS Snowboard World Championships 2011 in La Molina (SPA). Besides the two races at Schlegelkopf, there will be only one more World Cup in Telluride, Colorado, before the world's best battle for the titles in January.

On the 1'350m long course built by Anders Forsell (SWE), the Austrian talent and reigning world champion Markus Schairer (AUT) will face, among others, Nate Holland from the US and World Cup crack Pierre Vaultier (FRA) along with fellow Frenchman Tony Ramoin, who claimed bronze at Vancouver 2010. On the ladies' side, Olympic champion Maelle Ricker (CAN), her teammate Dominique Maltais and Olympic SBX runner-up Deborah Anthonioz (FRA) are odds-on favorites.

The "who is who" of the carving aces will start at Limone Piemonte. Led by Olympic champion Nicolien Sauerbreij (NED), Ekaterina Ilyukhina (RUS) and Marion Kreiner (AUT), who rounded up the Vancouver PGS podium as second and third, will compete in both races thus bringing star qualities to the resort's season opening. On the men's side, the crowd at the steep and challenging slope Marchetto Gorba has to take on Olympic silver medalist Benjamin Karl and his teammate Andreas Prommegger (both AUT), who leads the current parallel standings, if they intend to fight for podium ranks.
