Shiffrin unparalleled in St. Moritz with weekend sweep

American Mikaela Shiffrin swept the Audi FIS Ski World Cup weekend of racing in St. Moritz (SUI) by outdueling Petra Vlhova of Slovakia in the big final of the individual parallel slalom race on Sunday after winning Saturday's super-G. Despite an error in the run that looked to offer an advantage to Vlhova, Shiffrin battled back on the final gates of the course to take the win by a mere 0.11 seconds. It was a repeat of the final from the Courchevel debut of the event last season which Shiffrin also won.
The athletes skied through a variety of conditions throughout the day ranging from heavy snow during the qualifying run inspection to sunshine to blowing snow by the time the race concluded. The race crew worked tirelessly to keep a total of three tracks in great shape for the competitors.
Wendy Holdener of Switzerland turned a tough start to the day around after she nearly failed to qualify as one of the top 32 skiers from the morning. With the 31st fastest qualifying run, she faced the No. 3 seed Frida Hansdotter of Sweden in the 1/16th Final. To the delight of Swiss fans, Holdener advanced through challenges from Hansdotter, Irene Curtoni, Lena Duerr, and Katharina Liensberger to claim the final podium spot in third place.
