Moguls World Cup comes back to Tremblant

More than a month away from the last event in Thaiwoo (CHN), the FIS Freestyle Ski Moguls World Cup is finally set to come back in action this weekend with the fourth competition of the 2019/20 season rolling into Quebec’s Mont Tremblant (CAN) on Saturday, January 25.
Known as the heart of Canadian moguls skiing - Mont Tremblant will host its third consecutive World Cup event, after Freestyle Canada moved over to the new location for their annual moguls event in 2017/18.
Despite the recent relocation to Tremblant, it’s worth noting that the resort has a deep history of hosting World Cup competition, with moguls and aerials events stage here regularly from 1996 to 2005. And once again this season the classic venue of the Flying Mile run on the mountain’s south side will be the stage of one of the most anticipated competition in the region.
With a full day of qualifications (beginning at 9:20 EST) and finals (beginning at 13:30) hitting the renowned Quebec resort on Saturday, expect the women and men of the moguls World Cup to put on an exceptional show as they look to head into the world championships on a high.
Quebec has long been the locus of Canadian moguls skiing, producing some of the greats of the sport in the past and of the present, with the 2018 Olympic Winter Games medallist Justine Dufour-Lapointe and Mikael Kingsbury in the house this weekend ready to lead the Canadian squad in front of the home crowd.
Kingsbury, reigning World and Olympic champion, also the current World Cup leader will be dropping against the likes of Japan’s Ikuma Horishima, Benjamin Cavet of France, Matt Graham of Australia or Dimitry Reikherd of Kazakhstan, his closest rivals in the moguls World Cup ranking.
But Kingsbury will be competing just 20 minutes away from his hometown of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts and with one victory and one second place finish at the venue in Mont-Tremblant, expect Kingsbury to show his best skiing again on Saturday.
“The competition in moguls is fierce, and every race is a chance to prove yourself,” observed Kingsbury. “Even more so when you’re skiing at home, because you always want to do your best with family, friends and fans watching from the bottom of the course.
Also let’s not forget about Sweden’s young guns Walter Wallberg and Oskar Eloffson as well as Canada’s duo of Laurent Dumais and Kerrian Chunlaud, who will be looking to push for a top spot in front of the home crowd.
On the women’s side of the event Perrine Laffont of France will try to extend her current winning streak, after a perfect start into 2019/20 campaign with three victories in three competitions in Ruka (FIN) and Thaiwoo (CHN). Loffont won the event in Mont Tremblant last year, so it’s very likely that we can see the French rider fighting for victory also in 2020.
But to do that she will have to edge out her biggest rivals: Jaelin Kauf (USA), Anri Kawamura (JPN), Justine Dufour-Lapointe (CAN) and Anthony Jakarta (AUS), the moguls World Cup top-5 up to this point of the season.
