Val Gardena/Gröden (ITA) hosted the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup for the 50th time last weekend. On Friday evening, 15th December 2017, the Organisers put on a special celebration in the finish area, bringing together numerous past and present World Cup stars and a number of special guests, including FIS Council Member and President of the Italian Winter Sports Federation Flavio Roda, FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis and representatives from politics.
The show which included live performances by local dancers and theatre associations was broadcast live on Italian television. It led through the history of the famous Saslong races and welcomed many prominent figures on stage, including Alpine legends Franz Klammer (AUT), Pirmin Zurbriggen (SUI), Ulli Spiess (AUT), Herbert Plank (ITA) and Gustav Thöni (ITA).
Already in September 2017, the Organisers held a special celebration with past and present World Cup racers, different generations of Val Gardena/Gröden Race Organisers as well as numerous ski fans and dedicated volunteers who relieved the special memories of the past half century. Among the many highlights are the legendary 1975 FIS World Cup final with Gustav Thöni and Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark and the famous “deer encounter” of Italy’s Kristian Ghedina.
