In the coming weeks, the FIS Newsflash will introduce the applicants bidding to host the FIS World Championships in 2022 and 2023. The Slovenian venue of Planica is one of two Candidates for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2023:
Planica is a world-renowned venue that has not yet hosted the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. The fourth consecutive bid aims to change this.
Skiing is a part of the Slovenian national identity and it is no coincidence that the world sees Slovenes as a nation of skiers. If there is one sporting event where this national passion for skiing is clear, it is the World Cup ski flying competitions in Planica, which draw tens of thousands of spectators to the valley every year. Planica is known as the cradle of winter sports in central Europe and has played an important role in the evolution of Nordic disciplines.
This season, Planica hosted FIS World Cup events in Ski Jumping and Cross-Country, and several other FIS competitions. With that, it proved that it has all that it takes to offer athletes the proper conditions to achieve their goals and that it can welcome fans from every part of the globe. The events under the Ponce Mountains have a worldwide influence and are undoubtedly a huge promoter of Nordic skiing. The voice of Nordic skiing spreads together with the voice of Planica.
Planica’s candidacy is supported by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, Municipality of Kranjska Gora and the neighbouring local communities, which also include the municipalities of Villach (Austria) and Tarvisio (Italy). With its unique location in the Julian Alps which provides ideal winter conditions for hosting competitions, Planica is also easily accessible for spectators from this region of Europe.
You can call it a competition, but you can also call it coming together!
