FIS was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic deaths of IOC member and FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann and Argentinian freeski athlete Martin Rossi Quiroga.
A former player, coach and referee, Patrick Baumann dedicated his life to basketball and to the sports community. He was Deputy Secretary General (1995-2002) of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), and then appointed as Secretary General by the FIBA Central Board in 2002, a role he had held since. A Swiss national, Patrick Baumann was also President of the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, and actively working with FIS and the world of winter sports in this capacity.
FIS also sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of young freeski athlete Martin Rossi Quiroga (ARG), who died in a tragic training accident in a terrain park at Esquel. Martin comes from a true Argentinian skiing family with his uncle Norberto Quiroga and cousin Julieta Quiroga participating at the Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid 1980 and Sochi 2014. The fact that his life came to an end whilst doing his beloved sport does not make the loss any less painful for his family, friends and the Argentinian Ski and Mountaineering Association.
