A champion’s honour: Marco Odermatt receives his own gondola in Kitzbühel
Jun 23, 2025·Alpine SkiingThis summer marked a special return to Kitzbühel for Marco Odermatt (SUI/Stöckli) with a special occasion: a ceremony to unveil his very own gondola on the iconic Hahnenkammbahn, awarded in recognition of his Super-G victory on the Streif last January.
The four-time overall World Cup champion, Olympic gold medallist, and three-time world champion was clearly moved by the moment. Odermatt showed his trademark humility and warmth throughout the event, graciously taking time to sign autographs and pose for countless photos with fans, around 200 invited guests attended, along with just as many spontaneous visitors who gathered to share in the celebration.
Odermatt’s triumph in the Super-G earlier this year marked his first victory on the Streif, a venue that has always suited him well. Since 2019, he has competed 12 times in Kitzbühel, earning eight top-ten finishes. In downhill, he has stood on the podium three times, finishing second twice and third once.
During the ceremony, when asked if he had a wish the organizers could grant, the 27-year-old instead took the opportunity to express his gratitude.
The event also highlighted Odermatt’s deep appreciation across the local community. “What defines you beyond your sporting achievements is your personality,” said Viktoria Veider-Walser, CEO of Kitzbühel Tourism. Kitzbühel cable car CEO Anton Bodner echoed the sentiment, extending praise to the entire Swiss team — including Justin Murisier, Thomas Tumler, Stefan Rogentin, Marco Kohler, and retired legend Beat Feuz — all of whom joined Odermatt for the occasion. “You are role models, heroes, and inspirations for the next generation,” he said. Race Director Mario Mittermayer-Weinhandl added: “When I see the joy and camaraderie your team shares during course inspection, it reminds me of children’s races. It’s so refreshing. Marco, I hope you keep that spirit — and that one day you win the downhill too!” Odermatt smiled at the thought. “Of course, the downhill win is still missing — and it remains a big goal for the future. But the Super-G victory and this gondola already bring me a great sense of ease and motivation.”
His last visit to the Hahnenkamm in summer? Nearly 20 years ago. A childhood photo from the Streif serves as a reminder.
Odermatt now joins a prestigious group of athletes with their own gondola on the Hahnenkammbahn. Clément Noël (FRA/Dynastar), who won the Slalom in 2019, received his gondola following that victory. James Crawford (CAN/Head), winner of the Downhill in January, will be officially celebrated later this summer, at the end of July.
