For Matilde Lorenzi, for safety: the charity auction that unites the skiing community

A project that turns remembrance into action, supported by top athletes and values deeply shared by FIS.

One year after the tragic passing of Matilde Lorenzi, a promising young Italian skier who lost her life on 28 October 2024 on the slopes of Val Senales, a project has emerged to turn grief into hope and concrete commitment: the Matilde Lorenzi Foundation.

Launched this October, the charity auction marks the first major initiative of a Foundation that places ski safety at the heart of its mission — a topic that FIS deeply shares and actively promotes, through its work on protection standards, education and prevention programmes, and long-term initiatives to improve athlete welfare at every level.

The mission: safety on skis

The Matilde Lorenzi Foundation aims to promote and develop projects focused on safety in skiing, ensuring that every athlete — regardless of age or level — can enjoy the sport in a conscious and protected environment. Its mission stands on three core principles: education, prevention and support.

Education means equipping young athletes and those around them with the knowledge to recognise and manage risks. Prevention means acting before accidents happen — improving safety procedures, investing in training and awareness, and fostering the development of innovative protective technologies. One of the Foundation’s key goals is to identify, develop and promote new technological solutions that enhance athlete protection, making skiing ever safer and more forward-looking.

Supporting “Mati4Safety” means offering concrete and ongoing help to anyone who shares this commitment to safety — turning Matilde’s memory into a lasting legacy of awareness and responsibility. At its core lies a belief that prevention and education save lives, and that building a culture of safety is essential to the future of the sport.

The charity auction: sport and solidarity

To support its first projects, the Foundation has launched a major online charity auction featuring unique items donated by some of the biggest names in skiing and sport. It’s an opportunity to acquire exclusive memorabilia while contributing to a cause that speaks to the heart of the skiing community.

Among the donors are Sofia Goggia, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Jannik Sinner and Giorgio Chiellini, who have all offered signed items to help support the Foundation’s mission. The auction is live on the official Foundation website — fondazionematildelorenzi.it — and will remain open until Sunday, 2 November at 19:00 CET.

The initiative is also an invitation to athletes, coaches, fans and families to take part and spread the word — a simple yet powerful gesture to remember Matilde not with sorrow, but with a shared commitment to making skiing safer for all.
