Latvia to host Roller Skiing FIS World Championships

From the 8th- 11th August, Latvian ski centre Madona will host the FIS Roller Skiing World Championships for the first time, gathering more than 160 participants from 15 nations.

Madona has hosted big events in previous years – in seven winter seasons since 2011, Scandinavian Cups were held and in the last four summers, the FIS Roller Skiing World Cup was organised.

The biggest names on the start list come from Russia – triple 2018 Olympic silver medallist and four-time silver medal winner at last year’s FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld (AUT), Alexander Bolshunov, 2006 Olympic Champion Eugeniy Dementiev, Seefeld 2019 bronze medal winner Natalia Nepryaeva and Olympic relay silver medallist Alexey Chervotkin.

Other big name athletes in Madona include FIS World Cup sprint event podium athlete Alena Prochazkova (SVK), triple Roller Skiing World Champions Alessio Berlanda (ITA) and Ragnar Bragvin Andresen (NOR) and five-time Roller Skiing World Champion and FIS Cross-Country World Cup sprint finalist Linn Soemskar (SWE).

The FIS World Championships in Madona will start on Thursday with an interval start distance in classic style on the “Smeceres sils” track. The following two days, the competitions will take place in the city centre with sprints and a mass start in free technique. The championships will conclude on Sunday 11thAugust with the team sprint.
