From May 8–10, the Nordic Arena in Toblach hosted the latest FIS Cross-Country Homologation Seminar, organized together with SportOK Toblach. The seminar brought together 35 participants representing 20 nations, highlighting the continued international commitment to the development of high-quality cross-country skiing venues and courses.

The seminar was opened by Anna Rosa, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of collaboration, education, and innovation in homologation work. Throughout the three-day program, the seminar was coordinated by Allan Serrano from the United States, who led participants through lectures, workshops, and practical exercises at the Nordic Arena.

A major milestone of the seminar was the education and certification of new homologation personnel. Seven new Phase I candidates took part in the program, while six Phase II candidates successfully passed the Homologation Inspector Examination, strengthening the global network of qualified experts working within FIS Cross-Country.

The seminar focused heavily on current trends in course and venue design, with particular attention given to the development of a future Venue License system. Discussions and workshops explored how homologation standards can continue to evolve alongside the changing demands of modern cross-country skiing, including sustainability, athlete safety, accessibility, and event presentation.

Participants engaged in practical working group exercises at the Nordic Arena, providing valuable hands-on experience in homologation work and venue assessment. The collaborative format encouraged knowledge sharing between experienced inspectors, regional coordinators, and new candidates.

The educational program also featured a series of expert lectures covering several important topics within modern course design and homologation work:

  • Para course and venue design, presented by Torbjorn Broks Pettersen

  • Non-standard courses, presented by Simon Caprini

  • Regional Coordinator work, presented by Markus Kohler

In addition, participants contributed to workshop sessions focused on developing the content of the FIS Cross-Country Course and Venue Design Manual, an important reference document guiding future homologation standards and venue planning.

The seminar in Toblach once again demonstrated the strong international cooperation within the cross-country skiing community and underlined the importance of continuous education and innovation in course homologation and venue development.
