The Mass start race was driven by tactical decicions of the competitor field. In the mens competition, Raido Ränkel was leading the group and brought up some good speed and adding some tactical moves into the game – and was rewarded with the golden place! With some extra pushes towards the finish line, Raimo Vigants from Latvia ended up second before Patrick Fossum Kristoffersen from Norway. Ränkel says that the competition was good and adds:

„On the first lap I tested out my athletic form to see if I am able to take the lead and go for the win, I understood that this is possible. I made the decisive push 6 km before the finish and it was only in my luck that the group did not find consensus about who is going to leat the group as the wind was heavy. 2 km before the finish I felt it hard, but then again I saw that the victory was so close and it is possible to take it! About 700 m before the finish I was sure that the first place is mine this time! It is really good feeling to leave the victory to Estonia!“Raido Ränkel, mens winner mass start

The juniors claimed an all-Estonian podium with Anders Veerpalu, on the second place Aleksander Tamm and on the third place Steve Vahi.

There were no bonuses for women and they raced the same track and distance of 27 km F as well. In the womens category, the first place went to Estonian Johanna Udras. The second place was taken by Tuuli Tomingas - also from Estonia and on the third place by Kitija Auzina from Latvia. The victory in the womens junior category went to Merle Richter, second to Estonia Kätlin Kukk and the third place also for Estonia Anette Peltser.
