The FIS Cross-Country World Cup is headed to Dresden

For the fourth year in a row, the city of Dresden in Germany sets the stage for a city Sprint on the FIS Cross-Country schedule. The World Cup venue alongside the Elbe river usually attracts many winter fans, cheering on the world elite Cross-Country skiers. However due to the pandemic, for the second time the event will have to take place without spectators. Despite the circumstances, the Organizing Committee of Dresden World Cup have worked hard to ensure a spectacular and safe event nevertheless.

100% Sprint racing is on schedule. And with current Sprint World Cup leader Maja Dahlqvist on the lineup, all eyes will be on the 27 year-old Swede. After an injury on her thumb also Jonna Sundling reports back in the World Cup. The team colleague of Dahlqvist, who together collected the World Champion’s title at the WSC in Oberstdorf this Spring, had to step back from racing to give her thumb time to heal “For me it is a bonus that the healimng of the thumb went so fast and that I am already on the team again before Christmas,” says Sundling, whose cast was removed only just one week ago.

But not only the Swedish rockets have their eyes on the podium top. Nadine Fähndrich from Switzerland hit her maiden individual World Cup podium last year in Dresden and proved to be mastering the course setting very well. The 26 year-old proved her top shape already this past weekend again as she claimed a 2nd podium spot in Davos behind Dahlqvist and before last seasons Sprint World Cup winner Anamarija Lampic from Slovenia.

For the Men’s individual competitions, it is of course Federico Pellegrino who eyes to end up at the top of the ranking list. The Italian who already claimed 33 individual Sprint podium results also has his victory from last year to defend. But with contenders such as Richard Jouve from the French Team on the start line, reaching this result will not be an easy task. From the French Sprint experts, Richard Jouve still misses a victory but holds the record for most individual World Cup podiums in Sprints. 9 of those 11 podiums were reached in Free technique – as it will be scheduled in Dresden.

Also the support of the next generation of Cross-Country skiers has been a focus of the Dresden crew. In order to make the most of the temporary snow course, schools from the City and the surroundings have the chance to practice skiing under the watchful eyes of Olympic Medalist Tobias Angerer.
