Val Thorens SX race #1 cancelled due to strong wind

The weather gods were not on the ski cross side today, as teams woke up to some very strong and gusty winds in Val Thorens (FRA).

The originally scheduled single qualification was changed to a Holistic qualification format and postponed by an hour by the Jury as first step to save the race. This would have been the same qualification format as we saw in Arosa (SUI) with the final round of 64 men and 32 women in heats of four, where only the two fastest athletes crossing the finish line qualify for finals.

The strong and gusty winds however continued and did not decrease throughout the morning and despite all efforts done by the Jury, the OC and all stakeholders involved with the intention to postpone the competition by an hour to 14:00 CET, it was impossible to stage a safe race today. The health and safety of the athletes is highest priority; therefore, the decision of the cancellation was made shortly before 11:00 CET.

“It is really unfortunate that we couldn’t have a safe race today, because the OC put so much effort and work into the preparations and to even make this event possible, they had to really fight hard. I want to thank the organizer for their tremendous job and let’s pray for better weather tomorrow,” Klaus Waldner, FIS Ski Cross Race Director comments.

There is another race scheduled for tomorrow at 12:00 CET. There will be a Pre-Heat qualification in heats of four starting at 10:00 CET and the finals are scheduled for 12:00 CET.

Fingers crossed for good weather!
