Our Snow, Our Future
No snow means no winter sport; it's as simple as that.
Winter sports depend on healthy mountain ecosystems, reliable winter conditions, and thriving natural environments. Today, these foundations are increasingly under pressure.
Rising temperatures are shortening snow seasons.
Changes in biodiversity are affecting mountain ecosystems.
Even the events we value, from World Cups to local races, can have an environmental footprint beyond the competition itself.
This is why FIS is stepping up its approach to sustainability, rethinking how winter sports operate and driving change across the entire ecosystem. We are committed to contributing to climate action and nature protection, while continuously improving how events are organized. Our aim is to reduce the environmental impact of snow sports, raise awareness, and support the winter sports community in making more informed choices.
At the heart of our approach are three guiding principles:
Lead: We promote more responsible practices across the ski industry, using our platform to engage athletes, organizers, and fans.
Act: We work to reduce emissions and environmental impact within our operations, while supporting members and event organizers with practical tools and guidance.
Collaborate: We collaborate with scientists, international organizations, athletes, and 141 National Ski Associations to share knowledge, develop solutions, and scale best practices.
These principles are brought together in the FIS Sustainability Policy. This five-year vision is built around three core pillars: climate action, biodiversity and nature protection, and the circular economy.
Putting these guiding principles into action, the FIS Impact Programme showcases measurable progress across environmental, social, and governance areas. Taking a 360° approach to sustainability, the Impact Programme outlines a series of short-, mid-, and long-term goals for the 2024–2026 cycle, designed to engage stakeholders across snow sports and drive meaningful change in sustainability. The Impact Programme ensures that sustainability is embedded at the core of decision-making and long-term development. To learn more, download the full FIS Impact Programme.

This is the beginning, not a finish line.
Progress is accelerating. New initiatives are taking shape, partnerships are expanding, more data is being collected, new tools are being built, and a growing number of people across the FIS family are stepping up.
Yet, this progress depends on collaboration. If you’re an event organizer with an idea, a National Ski Association with a project, a partner with expertise, or an athlete who wants to make a difference, we want to hear from you.

FIS’s commitment to environmental stewardship has deep roots. It is inspired by the Mainau Manifesto, which is based on the earlier Green Charter of Mainau Island and the work of its founder, Count Lennart Bernadotte. For many years, these ideas have helped guide efforts to care for nature, and they remain the foundation of what we do.
