The FIS Nordic Combined Committee met for the 81st time on Friday, 31st of May during the FIS Calendar Conference in Cavtat-Dubrovnik. Next to reports from the past season, input from working groups and other stakeholder, new proposals for the development of Nordic Combined were made, discussed and decided about in the four-hour meeting.

After Günter Csar, Chairman of the Sub-Committee for Officials, Rules and Control, Race Director Lasse Ottesen, Continental Cup Coordinator Michael Neumayer, Equipment Controller Guntram Kraus and Media Coordinator Silke Tegethof had made their respective reports from the past season and past activities, the attention turned to the number of new proposals coming out of the Sub-Committee and Executive Board sessions in April and the funnel system to all National Ski Associations.

Committee decisions

The biggest decisions made were to adapt the programme of the Nordic Combined TRIPLE, the introduction of a Mixed Team event to the programme of the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships, starting from Oberwiesenthal 2020 and the introduction of the first World Cup calendar for Nordic Combined ladies beginning in the 2020/21 season.

Nordic Combined TRIPLE adjustment
Nordic Combined’s season highlight, the TRIPLE will be adjusted on the final day. Instead of two jumps and 15 km of skiing for the best 30 athletes of the TRIPLE standings, the programme will feature only one jump, 15 km of skiing and the best 40 athletes will be permitted to start.

Mixed Team
As a second major point to come out of the Committee, a Nordic Combined Mixed Team event will be included on the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships, beginning already in the upcoming winter in Oberwiesenthal. In order to be able to stay with the existing programme and not to overtax the Organising Committees financially, the Committee agreed to take out the Ind. Gundersen 5 km event for the men in exchange.

The Committee  also confirmed a long-term strategy to have five events on the JWSC programme in the future: an Individual for men and ladies, a Mixed Team event and a Team Event for men and for ladies (to be added when there are sufficient numbers of female athletes).

Ladies’ World Cup 2020/21
In addition to this, Race Director Lasse Ottesen presented a first draft for the introduction of a Ladies’ Nordic Combined World Cup in 2020/21 with four stops. All other confirmed calendars for the 2019 Summer Grand Prix and the 2019/20 season can be found on the FIS website as well.

All calendars and decisions were approved by the FIS Council in its meeting on the 2nd of June.

Fruitful discussions and insightful presentations

After fruitful discussions around a variety of topics, the Committee also heard reports from Infront Sports & Media on the TV numbers and ratings of the past season, from new Summer Grand Prix organisers Oberhof before Suzanne Tahk from a newly formed Working Group closed the meeting with interesting input from an athlete and team survey and recommendations for further Committee policies to develop Ladies’ Nordic Combined.
