Thomas Kjelbotn, who was born in Harstad near Tromsoe in the north of Norway, has always been active on skis, be it on jumping hills or in the cross-country track and started in his first Nordic Combined competition when he was nine years old. He has been pursuing a career in skiing from 14 years old onwards and debuted in the World Cup in Trondheim in 2008 where he also lives today.

Kjelbotn, who is known as one of the strong jumpers on Nordic Combined had been showing a promising development in the season of 2012/13 until a crash at the Continental Cup competition caused him to tear his ACL and take a forced break. But true to the motto "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger", he was back in the following season, following teammate Haavard Klemetsen's footsteps as one of the best jumpers of the entire field, taking up the top spots in the jumping competitions regularly. He achieved a career-best seventh rank at the World Cup weekend in Chaikovskiy, Russia in the same season of 2013/14.
