Winterberg

Winterberg is a town in the Hochsauerland district of North-Rhine Wesphalia, Germany and is located about 130 km east of Cologne and about 80 km south of Dortmund. The "Kahler Asten", with 842 m the second highest mountain of the Sauerland region, is located on city grounds. Winterberg is well-known as a major winter sports destination in Germany's Rothaargebirge region and features a bobsleigh, luge and skeleton track next to the jumping hill and numerous alpine slopes.

The HS87 St. Georg ski jumping hill was built on the slopes of the Herrloh-mountain in 1959 when the old hill had been destroyed by a strong tempest. In only 8 weeks of building time, he architect Fritz Gladen created a futuristic looking concrete structure which quickly became a landmark of the town. In 2000, the hill was extensively renovated to enable summer and winter jumping. The cross-country part of the competitions is held on a city-course in the town centre in summer and in the cross-country stadium "Bremberg" in winter which features cross-country tracks of different lenghts.
