FIS Ski Jumping Committee Meeting

The meeting of the FIS Ski Jumping Committee took place on Monday, May 9th, not in Zurich as usual, but virtually. In addition to numerous internal decisions, various decisions concerning the competitions of the upcoming summer and winter seasons were announced.
Modifications concerning the equipment
There were several adjustments regarding the competition material. For example, the ski tip and the radius of the same were redefined.
There will be a new measurement procedure for the regularly performed body measurements of the athletes. In the future, the body height will be determined with a laser tool while lying down and sitting. These measurements are decisive factors for the crotch length of the jumping suit.
Calendars presented
The calendars for women and men, summer and winter, were presented. There were minor changes to the calendars presented 4 weeks ago after the Sub-committee meeting. For the first time after a long break, the Ski Jumping World Cup will return to the USA (Iron Mountain, February 11 and 12, 2023).
The calendar for the upcoming winter is a step into the future for Ski Jumping. The opening competitions of the 2022/2023 winter season will be held with an ice inrun track and a green (plastic) landing hill for the first time ever in the Ski Jumping World Cup.
The combination of the ice inrun track and the plastic landing offers the possibility to start the World Cup season extremely early without the need of producing artificial snow. This means a big step when it comes to sustainability. Not only a lot of money is saved by the organizer but also a lot of energy. In addition, the mats on the landing area are an important step for safety, as it is extremely challenging to prepare the hill with artificial snow and the landing area was often bumpy which increased the risk of falls in the past.
Due to this novelty, the season-opening will take place already on November 5th and 6th in Wisla (POL).
"We had to make adjustments due to the FIFA Soccer World Cup that takes place in November. This is why we start the season very early and have a short break after the opener in Wisla and after the competitions in Ruka,“ FIS Race Director Sandro Pertile explained.
With a new competition series called "New Star Trophy“ for youngsters between 11 and 15 years of age, 5 organizers will organize 9 competitions during summer 2022 in Romania, Italy, Sweden, Finland, and Slovakia.

FIS Race Director Sandro Pertile was satisfied after the meeting and stated:
"The work in the subcommittees was extremely effective this year, that was also because of the newly introduced working groups. One of the focal points for all of us is the fact that the gap between the established ski jumping nations and the so-called 'small nations' is getting smaller. Also for this, the new New Star Trophy will be an important instrument.
