Hofmeister and Coratti take wins as PGS season wraps up in Rogla

Fresh off exciting weekend of PSL action in Piancavallo (ITA), Wednesday saw another thrilling race to go down on the slopes of Rogla (SLO), which wrapped up what was another successful parallel giant slalom World Cup campaign. Germany’s Ramona Theresia Hofmeister and Italy’s Edwin Coratti took the top spots in respective women’s and men’s competitions, with Hofmeister and her teammate Stefan Baumeister taking season’s top World Cup honours by securing the parallel giant slalom crystal globes.
Warm, spring conditions and a dynamic course allowed the sport’s best to shine yet once again, and with plenty of tights heats throughout the day, the event in Rogla concluded another highly entertaining PGS World Cup season on a high note.
In the women’s competition Ramona Theresia Hofmeister was back to her winning ways, taking her first victory in 2021/22. Hofmeister edged out the likes of Jessica Keiser (SUI), Sabine Schoeffmann (AUT) and her teammate Carolin Langenhorst (GER) before facing Tsubaki Miki (JPN) in the big final.
Once there, Hofmeister kicked things off strong, storming out of the start gate to gain .42 sec advantage over Miki at the first intermediate time that she would hold on to, crossing the finish line in indisputable first place.
Hofmeister came with an impressive clutch performance to take everything there was up for grabs in Rogla, as with the victory on Wednesday, all of the sudden the German rider jumped from fifth into first place in the PGS standing. With Rogla’s competition acting as the final PGS event of the season Hofmeister was awarded with the FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup small crystal globe for winning the giant slalom classification.
Hofmeister racked up one victory, as well as one runner-up and one third-place finish in six competitions, wrapping up the season with 307 points. Despite missing the final event in Slovenia, Sofiya Nadyrshina (RUS) took second with 291 points, while Daniela Ulbing (AUT) rounded out the podium in third place with 263 points.
With Hofmeister in top spot, Miki finished the competition in Rogla in the respective second place for her second World Cup podium in four days.
Michelle Dekker (NED) completed the women’s podium in third place for her first top-3 finish in almost four years. In the small final matchup Dekker came victorious against Carolin Langenhorst.
Moving over to the men’s side of things it was Edwin Coratti, who was on a mission on Wednesday, stepping things up from his second place in Piancavallo this past weekend and confidently racing to his first victory of the season, while facing some tough matchups against Maurizio Bormolini (ITA), Fabian Obmann (AUT), Sangho Lee (KOR), and finally Oskar Kwiatkowski (POL).
Once in the big final, Coratti left no doubt on who was the best athlete on the day, leading the way from start to finish and crossing the line .14 sec ahead of Kwiatkowski.
With the second place on the day Kwiatkowski scored his best result so far in 2021/22.
Home fans’ favourite Tim Mastnak (SLO) rounded out the men’s podium in third place after winning the small final against Sangho Lee.
Despite finishing Wednesday’s competition outside of top-16, Stefan Baumeister secured his career’s second World Cup title, backing his 2019 parallel slalom overall win with another small crystal globe, this time in parallel giant slalom.
With two victories and two runner-up spots in PGS in 2021/22, Baumeister finished the campaign with 384 points, with Lee following behind in second place with 359 points. Following his third place on the day, Mastnak jumped into PGS top-3 with 286 points.
The FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup is now heading to Germany for the final World Cup event of the season in Berchtesgaden, where the PSL as well as PRT competitions will take place on March 19-20.
