It's a somber one this week here at the Monday Mix, as we at FIS Snowboard and the snowboard community around the world mourn the loss of Alex "Chumpy" Pullin - Australian SBX legend, two-time world champion, two-time crystal globe winner, and nine-time World Cup winner - who passed away at just 32-years-old in a spear fishing accident last weekend. A larger-than-life personality and world-class competitor, Chumpy will be deeply missed by all.

So, before we get into the rest of this week's Mix, we'll start things off with a few of the tributes that have poured in for Chumpy from around the world…

Dear Chumpy, I am shocked and deeply saddened that you’re gone. I’m really lost for words... It’s shaken many people here and around the world. All I can think about is the legacy you’ve left behind. We have had a lot of time together, many memories, with my favourite being at the end of the 2016 World Cup. I vividly remember that season with you and how it was a tough one for both of us. But, we topped it off by winning the last World Cup together. We won double gold for Australia! It was a first for Australia in snowboard cross and it was the first World Cup win for me. I remember crossing the finish line and collapsing to my knees with tears of joy and then went to the side lines to watch you race. I screamed, yelled and cheered as you raced all the way down until you crossed that line. We both threw our hands up at the same time and roared in triumph. I broke through the finishing area barriers and rushed over to hug you. I was so so happy for you. I remember looking at you and we both teared up as we realised what had happened. It was a moment I’ve always and always will cherish. You’re a good man, athlete and role model. Always living life to its fullest, full of energy and always up for the challenge when it presents itself. Chumpy, Thankyou for your passion, drive and energy. Thankyou for the legacy you have left behind. Thankyou for what you have done for snowboarding especially in Australia. Without you, it wouldn’t be the same. Ride on Chumpy, Belle ❤️
Hey mate I was sitting in my car in Cooma when I heard the news. I thought it was a joke or someone had made some kind of fake news account. I called my dad, I talked to Harald, I spent the next 20 minutes sitting there in my car trying to figure out what had happened, how it could have happened. I don't think it really sunk in, I still don't think it has really sunk in even writing this letter to you now. I think you would feel honoured by the volume of support that is flowing in for you, if not a little overwhelmed. Your passing has brought out the best in our community, differences were put aside to honour your legacy, your career and we remembered the man behind the board, not just the headlines and the Redbull helmet. You have touched the lives of more people than you know. People from all walks of life. From the casual Olympic viewers that watched you race in 3 Olympics, cheering you on and sharing the highs and lows of that small part of you. To the young Aussie kids you inspired every year in Hotham, the teenagers who lined up next to you in the start gate, who couldn't believe they were about to race a world champion. You inspired, you led, and most importantly you loved what you did. I was one of those kids, you always said you remembered me as the shy kid in the corner. Although that didn’t last, and regardless of how you saw me then, I saw you as an inspiration, I grew up watching you race, I had shirts, papers and boards signed by you every year at the SSA Futures, I pulled out next to you in my first FIS Snowboardcross event, whether you knew it or not you were there pushing me to become better. Over the years you became more than just an idol, more than an inspiration, you became a friend. We traveled the world together, complained about shit hotel food, shared rooms, shredded pow. You were there for my first podium, you were there at my first Olympics, we shared some of the biggest moments in my life and it will never be the same without you. You were one of the greats, and you will be remembered. I hope you're carving it up wherever you are. Sick waves and deep pow.
Chumpy, as long as I’ve raced World Cup snowboard cross you were a leader that pushed our sport to new levels. I’ll never forget the amount of times our team sat in video review and heard “watch how Chumpy does it”. Thanks for the great memories and good conversations about our sport. You will be truly missed. RIP mate

RIP, Chumpy.

Chumpy always took the time to speak to, encourage and coach the next generation whenever he had the chance, so we'll move into the rest of this week's Mix with a video that we think might have made him smile - this clip of Anderson Zerpa, a 10-year-old Peruvian with dreams of World Cup competition who's putting in work pulling starts on the sand dunes of Huacachina.

We'd love to see you on the World Cup one day, Anderson…

A couple more pieces of SBX news here before we move on to some shreddin', as 2013/14 crystal globe winner and last season's third-overall men's rider Omar Visintin (ITA) joins SBX Life for an interview this Wednesday. SBX Life's originally scheduled interview with 2014 Olympic champion and reigning SBX world champ Eva Samkova (CZE) has been postoponed to August 5th...

None other than Italian Superstar Omar Visintin in the chat room this Wednesday, July 15th at 10am MST-USA/ 6pm CEST-Europe. We’ll be catching up on his summer exploits and all things SBX. Our final #ClassicsLive throwback competition of the series hit the webwaves last Wednesday and is still available for your viewing pleasure, so take a trip down memory lane to the 2008/09 Bardonecchia (ITA) halfpipe World Cup below.

And a huge, huge shoutout to our commentators Ian Findlay and Gaz Vogan, who expertly did the mental time travel to put themselves course-side for all of our FIS Snowboard and FIS Freestyle & Freeski competitions, for the entire #ClassicsLive series. It would simply not have been the same without those guys and we very much appreciate their efforts...

Ok, now let's get stuck in at Hood for a minute here, because a huge collection of North America's best are on hand there in Oregon and the fresh clips are coming fast and furious. Our favourite from last week? Probably Taylor Gold and this bluebird beauty. Chicken salad, mmmmm...

Home away from home ❤️

Mark McMorris may be Canadian but he lives down south most of the time, and he is on hand in Hood, on board, and on point for Method Monday with this little two-hitter line. Crank dat, Sparky...

Head over to @ussnowboardteam Facebook to go on a walk down memory lane tonight 🤩

And then there's Toby Miller, who's already dropping dub 14's just a couple days into his return to snow after four months off the board...

Oh, and a big shout out to Sochi 2014 halfpipe gold medalist Kaitlyn Farrington, who made a guest appearnace in the pipe to drop this handplant...

And, speaking of style and of Sochi 2014 gold medallists, Sage Kotsenburg has also returned to his former habitat, ripping park laps and dropping backside spins...off of his heels?? Whaaaat theeee...?

Hood isn't the only spot that's still firing here well into July, as over in Austria Clemens Millauer has been busy with his friends on the Molltaler Glacier putting this hype park set-up together...

BEYOND HAPPY for building this park with a bunch of good friends @moelltaler_gletscher.at 🥰 OPENING TOMORROW. Hope everyone enjoys 🙌 See y‘all up there 🌄 Big thanks to @adrian_krainer @sepplramsbacher @olivernageler @jetel_bali_surfhouse 🙌

Anna Gasser, Sarka Pankochova, Leone Guetala, Silvia Mittermul...the list of riders on hand in Molltaler is pretty spicy and sure to get spicier as word gets out about the set-up...

Down south of the equator we've been seen some DUMPS on the timeline over the last week or two, and Argentina's Mati Schmitt has not been wasting any time getting out after the powpow in Bariloche. Excuse us while we wipe up a bit of drool and watch this clip one more time here...

And with a quick 2000km hop across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand we can check in on 2019/20 slopestyle second-overall ripper Tiarn Collins, who's working on getting the shred feeling back after so many months off...

Oh Jesus! Getting the legs back #snowboarding 📹 @thomo2

Although, to be honest, we were kind of assuming the legs were in pretty good shape after watching TC stomp a ludicrous 20 tre flips in a row a few days earlier...

Ok, a few assorted tibits now, beginning with Torment Mag, who recently wrapped up a pretty groundbreaking week of interviews and features with LGBT+ members of the snowboard community. Check out a few choice quotes from some of the individuals featured here, below, and make sure to take a look at the big interviews through Torment's website...

It may take time for us to process the magnitude of #tormentpride week. The initial response was overwhelmingly positive. As we grow we want to continue to challenge the idea of what a snowboarder is. We want to first of all thank all the photographers, filmers, interviewers and supporters who helped make last week one to never forget. Secondly, we want to acknowledge all the people who have reached out in the form of text, phone call, email or DM and say thank you. As we move forward and synthesize what's taken place during this week it’s become very clear how many similar stories are out there. One in particular we want to acknowledge is that of #ChrisBrunkart (@28f2), an unbelievable photographer who is without doubt one of the first in our industry to come out as gay. Chris’ impact on snowboard photography and specific aesthetic is still felt today and I’m sure he would have appreciated the courage of Tanner, Kennedi, Chad, Jill and Jake. The way to change generally starts small. This is it building. Also, for everyone who ordered a Torment Ally shirt, thank you, your orders were well beyond what we made, so extend your patience as we wait for them to be reprinted and we’ll get them shipped as soon as we can.

More and more sports leagues and organizations have returned to action as pandemic restrictions ease, including F1 car racing, with GBR's Lewis Hamilton winning the Styrian Grand Prix last weekend. The second-winningest driver of all time (and quickly closing in on the legend Michael Schumacher's record), turns out Mr. Hamilton is also a shredder, as our friends at World Snow Day illustrated a week ago...

Go figure, 6 x @f1 World Champ @lewishamilton shreds 👌 #worldsnowday

And the Summitt Daily News did a feature on Chris Corning and the rest of the Teal Movie squad last week. The reigning slopestyle world champion and already tied atop the rankings as the most decorated men's World Cup park & pipe rider of all time with seven crystal globes - all at the age of just 20 years old - Corning is getting set to show the world his street and backcountry prowess with the upcoming video project, and we can't wait to see what he and the crew have in store for the movie...

Taking the road less traveled with @samklein__ 👣 #tealmovie Word is episode 3 of @skimask.szn is in the works! Keep eyes peeled 😤

Ok, a couple hot-temps athlete updates now, including Michela Moioli who has switched up boards and been seen out cutting turns wake surfing on Lake Como...

Il weekend è appena iniziato e mi sento già più rilassata 😎 Manca solo una birretta🍻😂 . . . #michelamoioli #wakeboard #wakesurf #surf #lake #lago #surfing #lagodilecco #lagodicomo #estateitaliana #lamiaestateinlombardia #lombardia #weekend #sabato #relax #fun #montagna #montagnaitalia #mare #onde #surfing

And Benny Karl, who's also in northern Italy enjoying some of the best the region has to offer, snapped on a bike ride through the UNESCO World Heritage Site Dolomites in San Candido...

SUNDAYS are for CoffeeRides 😍☀️ Wish you all a perfect day 🤘🏼Tomorrow is STARTING a hard week of WORK for me! But you know what? I looking forward it 🥳 . #coffeeride #cycling #passion #sundayride #weekend #sunday #motivation #takeiteasy #rideBMC #verleihtflügel @rh77cycling . @redbullaustria @smithoptics @garmin_beatyesterday @panchowheels @ride_bmc . 📷 @gepapictures

And while we don't see much snowboarding out of Benny and the rest of the riders on alpine side of shredding during the hotter months due to the fact that it's pretty much impossible to set a decent race course in the summer slush, we can take a peek in on the sand dunes of Chile, where the Dragon Fest sandboarding giant slalom went down last week...

Dragon Fest World Tour 🇨🇱 Slalom Gigante 🏁 Foi uma experiência incrível! #GoEsdrasTikinho #TikinhoPeloMundo #SandboardBrasil #Sandboarding #RedBull #RedBullChile #sandboardingchile

Phew, ok. Now we're sweating, we've got sand in our teeth, and we're two hours past deadling for when this thing is supposed to be online, so that's probably enough for this week. Let's close things out with a fade to whiteroom, courtesy of the one and only Pierre Vaultier...

A fresh breeze 🥶 for a warm summer! Enjoy !! 🏖🏕⛰🏛🌄 @nideckersnowboards @serrechevalier #snowboarding #snowboardturn #snowboardtricks #freeride #powderspray #powder #freeski #donnedesailes #fresh #breeze #cooldown #relax #enjoy

Beautiful.

As always, thank you for reading and much love. Don't forget to tell your friends and family that you love them, stay positive out there, and we'll see you next week!
