Passing of Julie Pomagalski

It is with great sadness that FIS learned of the passing of 1999 Snowboard Cross World Champion Julie Pomagalski (FRA) in an avalanche in Switzerland this week.
The 40-year-old French athlete from Meribel was a member of two French snowboard teams, as she competed in Snowboard Cross, where she became World Champion in 1999 in Berchtesgarden (GER), but also competed at the Alpine Snowboard World Cup in the disciplines Parallel Slalom and Parallel Giant Slalom.
Pomagalski became Vice-World Champion in 2003 in Parallel Giant Slalom at the Kreischberg World Championships in Austria.
In 2004, the French athlete triumphed in the overall Snowboard World Cup, winning the crystal globe across the snowboard disciplines, proving that she was an exceptional talent.
Until the end of her career in 2007, Pomagalski collected 34 World Cup podiums, eleven of them in Snowboard Cross. In total, she claimed 9 World Cup victories, of which it was 7 wins in Alpine Snowboard and 2 in Snowboard Cross.
At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, she finished sixth in the parallel giant slalom. She repeated that result four years later at the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy.
FIS would like to extend its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Julie.
