After a weekend of turns, twists and tension at Secret Garden, there is no longer any mystery as to who the ones to watch this season in Aerials skiing are.

China took a clean sweep all events on offer, winning also the Mixed Aerials Team on 21 December to add to their haul in the individual contests a day earlier.

The trio of Xu Mengtao (CHN), Li Tianma (CHN) and Qi Guangpu (CHN) were the day’s top performers, taking the win with a combined score of 315.35 points.

Another Chinese team, consisting of Chen Meiting (CHN), Wang Xindi (CHN) and Sun Jiaxu (CHN), took second place with a 308.49-point effort.

Kaila Kuhn (USA), Ashton Salwan (USA) and Connor Curran (USA) of the United States completed the podium in third place (267.41).

As a side boasting of two reigning Olympic champions, the quality of the day’s winning team was undeniable. Theirs was the team with all three skiers scoring above 100 in the final en route to another strong showing in the superfinal.

For reigning Olympic champions Xu and Qi, victory on the site of the 2022 Beijing Olympics was especially poignant and meaningful. They were the favourites going into that Games, but had to settle for silver behind the United States.

This makes up for the regret. (Almost) four years ago, we got a silver at the Olympic Games. Today, we did it, we got the (win).Xu Mengtao (CHN)

"Both Chinese teams did very good, I’m so proud of my teammates, and myself too," she added.

Li, who adds the team win onto his triumph in the individual event, put it simply: “Do you know how you can be a champion? Have two Olympic champions on your team.”

Indeed, for Qi, there was added significance to the occasion, with his family and young daughter watching in the crowd.

He said: “I’m very happy today to return to this site and win the team event. I’m so happy that my family, my daughter was here to cheer me on.”

The Freestyle World Cup circuit now takes a brief holiday break and will resume in the first week of the new year with aerialists competing in Lac-Beauport.
