The moguls world bids farewell to one of its most consistent and uplifting athletes, as Hinako Tomitaka has announced her retirement from competitive skiing.
At just 25 years old, Tomitaka steps away after more than a decade on the FIS Freestyle World Cup circuit, leaving behind a legacy defined by perseverance, high-level performances, and an unmistakable positive spirit that resonated across the sport.
Making her World Cup debut in 2015, Tomitaka quickly established herself as a regular contender on tour. Across 97 starts, she claimed three podium finishes and, in recent years, became a fixture among the world’s elite, consistently placing within the overall top 10. This past season marked one of the strongest of her career, as she finished among the top five moguls athletes in the world.
Fittingly, Tomitaka’s final competitive appearance came on home snow in Nanto-Toyama (JPN), where she delivered a memorable performance to claim second place—an emotional send-off in front of a home crowd.
On the biggest stages, Tomitaka proved her ability to challenge for the top. She represented Japan at two Olympic Winter Games, in Beijing (CHN) and Livigno (ITA), narrowly missing out on a medal this season with a fourth-place finish in moguls. At the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, she competed on four occasions, with her standout achievement coming in Engadin (SUI), where she secured a silver medal in moguls.
Beyond the results, Tomitaka will be remembered for her character just as much as her performances. Always smiling, always bringing energy to the start gate and beyond, she became a beloved figure within the freestyle community.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and the entire freestyle family extend their heartfelt thanks to Hinako Tomitaka for her years of dedication to the sport and wish her all the best in the next chapter.
You will be missed.
