FIS is pleased to announce the receipt of a total of five applications to be Candidates for the organisation of FIS World Championships in 2028 and 2029. By the May 1st 2023 deadline, the following candidacies were received:

  • Three applications for the 2029 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships submitted by Narvik (NOR), Soldeu (AND) and Val Gardena (ITA).

  • One application for the 2029 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships submitted by Lahti (FIN)

  • One application for the 2028 FIS Ski Flying World Championship submitted by Planica (SLO)

It is the second application for the Alpine candidates of Narvik and Soldeu, while Val Gardena is a first-time candidate.

Lahti is no stranger to hosting major events as the Finnish venue recently celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the Lahti Games and most recently hosted the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017. The 2029 edition would be the eighth time Lahti has hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships.

Planica is an equally experienced World Championship host, having just staged the successful FIS Nordic World Ski Championships this last winter. Additionally, Planica has hosted the Ski Flying World Championships seven previous editions.

Next Steps for the Candidates

A detailed concept for each Candidates’ bid is due by 1st August 2023 based on a specific FIS Questionnaire. The questionnaire asks for details regarding plans for sports organisation, venue and facilities, legacy, workforce and volunteers, sustainability and environment, sports integrity, accommodation, transportation, security, commercial rights and marketing, broadcast operations and media services, communications and promotion, ceremonies, spectator services, the ski festival, legal aspects, organisation structure and financing.

After the questionnaire is received, a formal meeting with each of the Candidates will take place in autumn 2023 with the FIS Inspection Group, after which each Candidate will finalise its concept for its bid.

In April 2024, the Candidate Questionnaire and FIS Inspection Group report will be published and distributed to the National Ski Associations, Technical Committee chairs and the FIS Council.

Election by FIS Council May 2024

On June 4th at the 55th International Ski Congress in Reykjavik (ISL), each candidate will make their final presentation to the FIS Council, which will then elect the Organisers of the FIS World Championships 2028 and 2029.
