FIS has expanded its Para Snow Sports team with the appointment of Boštjan Anderlič to the role of Para Snow Sports Coordinator.

Anderlič, currently employed by FIS as a Para Alpine Race Director Assistant, officially takes up the newly-created position on September 1st. He will report directly to Para Snow Sports Director Dimitrije Lazarovski.

“My job is to be a bridge between the FIS office, local organizing committees, and race directors in Para Cross-Country, Para Snowboard, and Para Alpine,” says Anderlič. “We will communicate so that the race directors can focus on their job on World Cup races. I will also be meeting with coaches, advisory groups, and athletes’ commissions.”

Having trained as an Alpine Ski coach in his native Slovenia, Anderlič went on to work for the country’s National Ski Association in a number of roles. As well as leading teams at Winter Youth Olympic Games and European Youth Olympic Winter Festivals, he spent over a decade as Head of Youth and Children’s Skiing Programs. From 2019-21, he was also a technical delegate (TD) for FIS.

With most of his experience being in Alpine Skiing, Anderlič admits he has “new things” to learn although he did work on Cross-Country races at Planica during his time at the Ski Association of Slovenia. And he is very much looking forward to being involved in Para Snowboard for the first time.

One thing Anderlič is keen to build on is the inclusion of Para athletes at this year’s Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim.

Inclusion would be our goal for the coming years. It worked really well in Trondheim, so we will be looking at presenting Para sports alongside able-bodied events.Boštjan Anderlič, FIS Para Snow Sports Coordinator

“In Alpine Skiing this season, Para athletes will operate as forerunners for World Cup races. It also happened at January’s Winter World University Games where Para and able-bodied athletes were at the start together for Super G and Alpine Combined. There were no problems and it was a positive experience for everyone involved.”

Anderlič keen to improve conditions for Para athletes

Despite not having officially started his new role, Anderlič is already beginning to address issues facing Para athletes such as accessibility to venues.

“From meetings at the end of last season with coaches, it’s clear we can improve in certain areas,” he observed. “Team hospitality is one, so things like providing a tent and lunch for racers. Also, for instance, having more than one accessible toilet on the slope.

“I have already spoken to organizers about these, as well as making hotels more affordable. At World Cup and Europa Cup there is usually a price for the package of hotel, ski lift tickets, and food. But in some places, that cost is almost double for Para athletes so we need to work on that.”

On the new role, Lazarovski commented, “Improving the ‘product’ needs strengthening of the team and improving the connection and communication between local organizing committees, race directors and the FIS Para Snow Sports management team.

“The governance of Para Snow Sports following its transfer (from the International Paralympic Committee) just three seasons ago requires continued investment, and this is the latest step that FIS has made in order to ensure qualitative improvements on the events delivery side.”

He sees Anderlič as the “perfect fit” for the position thanks to his previous engagement in multiple projects in FIS disciplines. “I am sure with last season’s experience as a Race Director Assistant, Boštjan will be a great asset to the FIS team, and provide great stability in the triangle with race directors and local organizing committees,” he added.

“With his previous experience, he can help improve the quality of the Para Snow Sports World Cup and World Championships, and provide the stage for athletes to be able to perform to their best at all World Cup events.”
