It is with deep sadness that FIS mourns the passing of Dr. Hans Spring, honorary member of the FIS Medical Committee. Over many years of service, Dr. Spring was a highly valued and active member of the Committee, making an important contribution to the development of medical care and athlete safety in snow sports.
Dr. Spring was among those involved in establishing the FIS Injury Surveillance System, helping lay the foundations for work that continues to support the wellbeing of athletes today, and after his active career at Switzerland’s winter sports federation, Swiss Ski, he remained closely engaged in the sport as a medical supervisor - continuing to share his expertise and commitment with dedication and generosity.
Beyond his work with FIS and Swiss Ski, Dr. Spring also served as President of SEMS (Sports & Exercise Medicine Switzerland) from 1988 to 1993. SEMS paid tribute to his commitment to high-performance sport, particularly Swiss skiing, as well as to the training of young doctors and his publications on training, mobility and back-related issues.
Dr. Spring leaves behind a meaningful legacy within the FIS medical community and in snow sports more broadly. A minute's silence was held for him at today's meeting of the FIS Medical Expert Committee, and he will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
FIS extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
