The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) is honored to receive the GLORIA Award for Environmental Sustainability in Sport at Sports Summit Madrid 2026, held on June 17 at the MOM Culinary Institute.

The award recognizes the progress achieved through FIS’s sustainability strategy. Through a range of projects, practical tools, educational resources, and strategic partnerships, the strategy is helping to reduce environmental impacts and promote more sustainable practices across snow sports.

"This is the second international recognition FIS has received for its sustainability efforts in the last eight months, and we are extremely proud of this achievement. It confirms that the direction we have taken, and the work we are carrying out together with our partners, are meaningful and creating real value." Susanna Sieff, Sustainability Director at the International Ski and Snowboard Federation

The GLORIA Ibero-American Sports Awards celebrate individuals, institutions, and organizations that leverage sport to create positive social change. By recognizing achievements in sustainability, inclusion, innovation, education, and economic development, the awards highlight sport's growing influence in addressing global challenges and advancing a more sustainable future.

The Work Behind the Award: Advancing Environmental Stewardship in Snow Sports

Winter sports are intrinsically linked to the natural world, making the protection of mountain landscapes essential to preserving their heritage, culture, and identity. Guided by this responsibility, FIS is committed to advancing initiatives that reduce the environmental impact of snow sports.

This commitment is reflected in FIS's sustainability strategy, which brings together a range of initiatives such as the FIS CO₂ Calculator, sustainability guides, webinars, and educational materials. Together, these efforts are helping National Ski Associations, Local Organizing Committees, ski resorts, and other partners take meaningful action to reduce emissions and minimize environmental impacts.

In addition, FIS continues to strengthen its network of institutional partnerships. Organizations within this network include the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative (SCI), the Stockholm Resilience Centre, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as initiatives linked to the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. By bringing together experts from across science, technology, and sport, FIS is fostering collaboration to develop sustainable solutions.

One example of this collaborative approach is FIS's partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation through the Human-Wildlife Initiative. The project seeks to better understand how snow sports events affect wildlife while identifying solutions that allow both sport and nature to thrive. This work demonstrates what can be achieved when different sectors work together toward a shared objective.

Collectively, these projects, tools, resources, and partnerships are a testament to FIS's long-term commitment to environmental stewardship in sport and the breadth of work recognized through this award.

The GLORIA Award for Environmental Sustainability in Sport as a Symbol of Collective Progress

For FIS, the true value of the GLORIA Award for Environmental Sustainability is not the recognition itself, but what it represents. It is a meaningful sign that the federation and its partners are making a positive difference. The award acknowledges the collective efforts of the entire FIS community in protecting winter environments and preserving the mountain landscapes that snow sports depend on.

"It was a great honor to receive this award on behalf of FIS. It was a proud and emotional moment, and an important recognition of the organization’s commitment to environmental sustainability." - May Peus España, FIS Council Member
