Months after the end of the 2024/25 season, the unforgettable editions of the FIS World Championships keep on collecting praise across different fronts, including sustainable design.

Stora Enso, a presenting sponsor of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2025, has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Design Award 2025 for the innovative medal boxes that were created for the event in Trondheim − and that were subsequently featured at the FIS Para World Championships for Cross-Country, in Toblach; Alpine, in Maribor; and Snowboard, in Big White.

Fittingly, the medal boxes were first presented at an event that integrated Para and able-bodied athletes like never before. The product drew attention for a few key design features:

  • Accessibility: Braille inscriptions ensuring that the boxes are intuitive and fully usable for visually impaired athletes.

  • Functionality: Designed for easy handling, even when athletes are wearing gloves.

  • Elegant Design: A blend of comfort and sophistication, with soft-touch and high-gloss finishes that both protect and beautifully showcase the medals.

  • Sustainable Materials: The medal boxes are made from a blend of cardboard and corrugated board, incorporating both recycled content and renewable resources. Since the board is sourced from trees, which naturally grow back, the materials are fully renewable.

"We are proud to see Stora Enso’s medal box design receive this global recognition. Sustainability and inclusivity played an important role in the 2025 World Ski Championships, and these boxes reflect those values in a meaningful way,” says Susanna Sieff, FIS Sustainability Director.

They remind us that even small choices – like using renewable and recyclable materials or adding accessible features such as braille – can make a real difference. Step by step, and detail by detail, we can move towards a future where design excellence goes hand in hand with environmental and social responsibility.Susanna Sieff, FIS Sustainability Director
