The IOC Executive Board has approved the addition of the Ski Cross Mixed Team event to the sports programme for the Alpes 2030 Olympic Winter Games, expanding Ski Cross to three Olympic medal events alongside the men's and women's individual competitions.
The new event reflects the continued growth of mixed team formats across the Olympic Winter Games and provides Ski Cross athletes with another opportunity to compete for Olympic medals. Pairing one female and one male athlete from each nation, the format introduces an additional tactical dimension while staying true to the head-to-head racing that defines the discipline.
"The Mixed Team event brings a completely different dimension to Ski Cross," said FIS Ski Cross Race Director Klaus Waldner. "Every athlete is racing not only for themselves but also for their teammate and their country. It creates a unique atmosphere and adds another exciting element to the competition."
The Ski Cross Mixed Team event has already featured at major international competitions, including the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games and the FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships in Bakuriani 2023 and Engadin 2025. It will also return at the Montafon 2027 World Championships, further establishing its place on the international competition calendar.
Its inclusion at Alpes 2030 also reflects the growing role of mixed team competitions across the Olympic Winter Games. Snowboard Cross has featured a Mixed Team event since the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, while Snowboard Alpine and Ski Jumping will also add mixed team events to the Olympic programme at Alpes 2030.
For Ski Cross, the new Olympic event also highlights the importance of strong national programmes, rewarding countries that consistently develop both female and male athletes capable of competing at the highest level.
"The Mixed Team event is about more than adding another medal opportunity," Waldner said. "It rewards the strength of an entire team and showcases another side of Ski Cross. We believe it will create exciting racing and be a great addition to the Olympic programme."
The addition comes as Ski Cross continues to strengthen its position within freestyle skiing. Since making its Olympic debut at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the discipline has established itself as one of the most exciting events on the Olympic programme, combining speed, tactics and close head-to-head racing.
The level of competition continues to grow, with athletes from an increasing number of nations regularly challenging for podiums on the FIS Ski Cross World Cup circuit. That international depth, together with the discipline's spectator appeal, has helped create the foundation for the addition of a third Olympic medal event.
With the addition of the Mixed Team event, Ski Cross will enter Alpes 2030 with an expanded Olympic programme, adding a new team format to one of the most dynamic disciplines at the Olympic Winter Games.
