Due to required upgrades, the Ski Jumping World Cup event at Lake Placid (USA) - scheduled for December 13-14 - has been cancelled. In its place, Klingenthal (GER) will stage individual competitions with further information to be communicated in due course.

In a recent inspection at Lake Placid, damage was discovered to steel supports for the observation deck on the HS128 Large Hill. The planned work will block access to the athlete pathway to the in-run, an essential standard outlined by FIS World Cup regulations.

While the jump and tower remain structurally sound, the steel structure - originally built for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games - will require extensive scaffolding similar to that on a skyscraper. According to the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), the corporation that looks after venues used at those Games, this is “a complex project expected to take approximately 15 weeks”.

Lake Placid’s HS100 Normal Hill remains in operation with the U.S. Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined National Championships - as part of the Flaming Leaves Festival - still set for October 11-12.

“The Olympic Authority remains fully committed to ski jumping in Lake Placid and to maintaining world-class facilities that meet the highest standards of international competition,” stated ORDA’s Darcy Norfolk Rowe. “While relocating this year’s World Cup is a difficult but necessary decision, we look forward to completing these improvements and welcoming the world back to future World Cup events after construction.”

"This is a great pity, but these are the facts now,” said FIS Ski Jumping Race Director Sandro Pertile. “We hope that the construction work can be carried out quickly.

“We are counting on the organizers in Lake Placid and, of course, want to return there with the World Cup as soon as possible.”
