Italian speed skier Giovanni Franzoni returned to Kitzbühel on 20 June to receive a special honour following his memorable victory on the legendary Streif last January. The 25-year-old was presented with his own Hahnenkamm gondola, joining an exclusive group of athletes whose achievements have been permanently celebrated at one of alpine skiing’s most iconic venues.
Although Franzoni has competed only four times on the Hahnenkamm courses in Downhill and Super-G, his stunning Downhill victory on 24 January 2026 has already secured him a special place in Kitzbühel history. The skier from Manerba del Garda became just the fourth Italian man to win the famous Streif Downhill, following in the footsteps of Kristian Ghedina, Peter Fill and Dominik Paris.
The affection for Franzoni was evident throughout the day, as fans gathered to congratulate the Italian star. On his way to the ceremony at the Hahnenkammbahn valley station, he was repeatedly stopped for photos, selfies and autograph requests, highlighting the lasting impact of his breakthrough victory.
Hahnenkamm Race Organising Committee Chairman Michael Huber praised the performance that earned Franzoni his place among the greats of Kitzbühel.
Franzoni returned to Kitzbühel accompanied by family and friends, including his twin brother Alessandro and his girlfriend Camilla. Visibly moved by the ceremony and the recognition, he reflected on a day that brought back memories of a remarkable winter.
The Italian also paid tribute to the organisers and the unique atmosphere of the Hahnenkamm races.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in Kitzbühel,” he said. “What you create here for us every year is extraordinary. This race is, and always will be, something very special for all of us.”
