Austria’s Mirjam Puchner has announced her retirement from competitive skiing, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 14-year career at the highest level of alpine racing.

A specialist in the speed disciplines, Puchner departs as one of Austria’s most accomplished downhill and Super G racers of her generation. Her career highlights include an Olympic silver medal in Super G at Beijing 2022, a World Championship silver medal in Downhill at Saalbach 2025, as well as a total of nine World Cup podiums – including two victories, both in Downhill.

She leaves the World Cup stage on a strong note, with her most recent podium coming in the 2025 season, when she finished third in the downhill in St. Moritz.

After many intense years on the World Cup circuit, I feel it’s time for a new chapter. I noticed last winter that my willingness to take maximum risks wasn’t the same anymore. When head and heart both say it’s time to step back, you should listen.Mirjam Puchner

The 33-year-old made her World Cup debut in January 2013 in St. Anton. Just a year later, she celebrated her first podium with third place in Downhill in St. Moritz. Her journey was not without setbacks: after suffering a shin and fibula fracture, Puchner fought her way back to the top level, demonstrating the resilience and determination that became hallmarks of her career.

Her breakthrough years saw her establish herself among the world’s elite speed skiers, highlighted by podium finishes on some of the sport’s most iconic venues and major championship success on the global stage.

I look back with gratitude on a journey that shaped me deeply – with emotional wins, podiums at major events, and comebacks after injury. Skiing will always be part of me, but I’m now looking forward to what comes next.Mirjam Puchner
