Great Britain wins Nations Cup at Lowland Championships

On Sunday the 29th of September Great Britain won the Lowland Championships in SnowWorld Landgraaf (The Netherlands). After already leading the competition on Saturday with great results on Saturdays SnowWorld Cup Slalom and a win in the parallel slalom Team Event, they defended their position well. The Netherlands came out as second, they had a great raceday on Sunday but missed to score points in the Team Event. Belgium completed the podium with a third place. There are 6 different federations joining these Lowland Championships, with Luxemburg, Ireland and Danmark just missing the podium.
The Lowland Championships (two individual slalom races and one parallel slalom team event) was hosted in the Netherlands in SnowWorld Landgraaf, one of the many snowdomes there. It is possible to put a slalom of about 35 gates on the FIS homologated slope. These races are scheduled at a perfect moment in the ‘preseason’ to combine training days with an indoor race weekend. For a lot of young racers, it’s their first encounter with an international event, where their competing with racers within their own age groups.
Organizing such an event is only possible with a good cooperation and effort from all the volunteers, coaches and federations. They are the ones that make it happen for the lowland skiracers. The cooperation between the different countries and their volunteers is great. This kind of event takes the Lowland alpine ski sport further. There were around 350 different skiracers at the start of this race (each day), it is the largest alpine ski race ever organized indoors. Nevertheless, the competitions were organized as if the federations do this together on a regular basis.

About the Indoor Lowland Championships
In 2014 the Belgian Ski federation by the person of Christoph Lemeire started the idea of creating a competition amongst alpine skiracers from the “Lowlands” such as Belgium, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and since 2018 also Denmark within the various skidomes of those countries. In 2019 the Snowsports Association of Ireland joined this alpine sporting event. Bringing the total of participating countries up to six nations.
Supported by the FIS the first Indoor Lowlands Championship was hosted in 2014 in Belgium by the Belgium Skifederation in SnowValley Peer. Since then the championship has evolved in an international field of over 300 competitors every year!
