Thomas Stauffer, head coach of the Swiss men's Alpine Skiing team, elected as 2023 Coach of the Year

The end of the year is also the time for award ceremonies. Last night, Switzerland honored its best athletes of the year 2023 at the Swiss Sports Awards. At the end of the evening, winter sports, particularly alpine skiing, were the big winners.

It came as no surprise that Alpine stars Lara Gut-Behrami and Marco Odermatt won the titles of Female Athlete and Male Athlete of the Year for 2023. The awards were voted on by the public.

For Gut-Behrami, it was her third major win at the awards after earning the Female Athlete of the Year in 2016 and Newcomer of the Year in 2008.  Marco Odermatt has now taken home the Male Athlete of the Year three years in a row, following the successes in 2021 and 2022.

Alpine Skiing was also highlighted in the categories of Coach of the Year and Best Talent Sport (Junior category) with the victory of Thomas Stauffer, head coach of the men's Alpine Skiing team, and Stefanie Grob, double Junior World Champion in 2023.

In addition to the above winners, several well-known figures from the global winter sports scene were nominated for various awards. Freestyle skiers Mathilde Gremaud and Andri Ragettli were both contenders for the titles of Female Athlete and Male Athlete of the Year.

FIS congratulates all the winners from last evening and would especially like to highlight the victory of Thomas Stauffer, who is a long-serving member of the Alpine Skiing World Cup sub-committee.
