Season's first Rollerski World Cup in the books

The region of Telemark in Norway delivered a great festival around the Rollerski World Cup events from 24th to 26th June. With a 10km/15km Interval start, a Sprint in Free technique and a Mass Start in Classic technique, a successful first meeting of the worlds Rollerski elite went underway.

Friday – Interval Start
Marte Skaanes was the women of the hour in the opening event of 10km in Free technique. The 25 year-old hit the fastest time with a margin of 31.3 seconds to second placed Ragnhild Haga (NOR) and last year’s double World Champion in Rollerskiing – Linn Soemskar from Sweden.

Simen Hegstad Krüger was the pacemaker in the men’s 15km F around the brand-new course set of the Energi Arena Grønjær in Notodden. Throughout the race, the Norwegian managed to break out a margin of 52.6 seconds to his successors. Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget takes the second place before Hans Christer Holund who concludes a full podium of the Norwegian Cross-Country National Team athletes for whom the Rollerski World Cup is part of the summer training camp.

Saturday – Sprint day
With spectators back along the stands and a bluebird summer day, the World Cup Sprint races were perfectly set in the town of Bø.
Right from the start of the qualifications, Mathilde Myhrvold took the lead on the 1.4km course track. Despite the strong performance, the victory of the 23 year-old did not come easy with facing four of her Natioal team colleagues (Weng Lotta & Tiril, Ane Stenseth and Anna Svendsen) as well as Swedish Rollerski expert Linn Soemskar in the finals.

The men’s lineup for the Sprint around Bø promised action at it’s best. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was the star of the show but had to keep the focus on the track as Haavard Solaas Taugboel challenged him until the finish line. But it was not only the Norwegians who set the pace as no Rollerski Sprint competition would be complete without Italian rocket Emanuele Becchis. The Italian mixed up the race speed in perfect fashion and so also the British team with Andrew Young and James Clugnet as well as the sixth finalist, Harald Astrup Arnesen from Norway had to go all in for the top spots.

Sunday – Kanalrennet 24km/48km C Mst
The 24km course track was set to follow the Telemark channel from – and back to – the town of Lunde. 20 female athletes entered the competition but the top-10 remined together through the entire race and all crossed the finish line within 8 seconds. The finish ended in a tight Sprint that was won by Lotta Udnes Weng, 0.2 seconds before Amalie Haakonsen Ous and 0.5 seconds before Linn Soemskar who raced to her third podium spot on that weekend.

A similar situation arose in the men’s distance race with 6 competitors having to launch for the podium spots at the finish line. It came down to Johannes Høsflot Klæbo finishing in 1:47:15.6 before Haavard Solaas Taugbøl, Mikael Gunnulfsen and Pål Trøan Aune ended in a foto finish for the remaining podium spots.
