The 2022 FIS Park & Pipe Junior World Championships are set to go down from March 7-13, 2022, in Leysin (SUI), where the world’s best up-and-coming free skiers and snowboarders are on hand and ready to battle it out for this year’s medals in halfpipe, big air and slopestyle.
Freeski competition in Leysin will begin with halfpipe qualifications on Monday, March 7, followed by finals on Tuesday. Freeski big air will follow up pipe action, with qualifications on Wednesday, March 9, and finals the following day. Finally, slopestyle competition will wrap up the freeski programme at Leysin 2022 with qualifications on Saturday, March 12, followed by finals on Sunday.
Leysin 2022 snowboard action will also kick off with with halfpipe qualifications on Monday and finals on Tuesday, followed by slopestyle qualifications on Wednesday, March 9, and slopestyle finals on Thursday, and will finally wrapping up with big air qualifications on Saturday and big air finals on Sunday.
Leysin has played host to some of the biggest junior-level competitions in the world over the past few seasons, including the halfpipe Junior World Championships back in 2018/19, and the 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games two seasons ago. With an absolutely elite slopestyle/big air course and halfpipe both primed and ready to welcome the athletes, and near-perfect weather forecast for the duration of the JWCs, all the pieces are in place for a truly epic week to come in Switzerland.
As always, one of the most exciting aspects of the JWCs will be the combination of up-and-coming World Cup and Olympic athletes with those who are even greener, less experienced and hungry to make their mark on the world’s stage in the coming years.
With a new Olympic cycle just in its very earliest phase, many of the athletes we see dropping in on competition at Leysin 2022 are likely to be household names once the next Games roll around at Milan/Cortina 2026, and we can’t wait to see who breaks out and takes the next step towards stardom this week.
