World Championships in Seefeld - This remains

Mar 03, 2019·Ski Jumping
Markus Eisenbichler

The World Championships in Seefeld were a great stage for the ski jumpers. The organizers did a very good job. With Maren Lundby, Markus Eisenbichler and Dawid Kubacki worthy World Champions were crowned. The teams of Germany were unbeatable. The WSC offered everything you can expect from elite sports, lots of top performances and emotions.

Here's what will be remembered:
The weather: Only on 2 of the 12 training or competitions days the sun was not shining in Innsbruck and Seefeld. Great conditions also for 5 of the 6 competitions. This was not expected, especially considering the fact that it's often windy in Innsbruck this time of year.
Even if the normal hill competition was not really easy to watch due to the heavy snowfall and wind: The weather was great.

The unlucky fellow - Ryoyu Kobayashi: The outstanding athlete of this winter would have deserved an individual medal. Kobayashi won bronze with the Japanese team on the large hill, in the normal hill competition he was leading after the first round, but had no chance to win a medal due to the slow inrun track. Bad luck for this season's serial winner.

The defending champion - Stefan Kraft: The Salzburg-native could not defend one of his individual titles, but he's still among the winners. "My jumps today were good, I'm satisfied with my performance. Five others were simply better than me", Kraft said after his sixth place in Innsbruck. No disappointment, no excuses. The greatness of an athlete shows in defeat. Kraft is a great athlete. In Seefeld, he won three medals (bronze individual NH, silver team men, silver mixed team).

The champion - Markus Eisenbichler: The man who has never won a World Cup, returns home from Seefeld as a serial winner. The scream of the Bavarian in Innsbruck was the most emotional moment of the WSC - goosebumps. Then he won gold with the team and the mixed team. Markus Eisenbichler - great ski jumper and a really great guy.

The incredible race to catch up of Dawid Kubacki and Kamil Stoch: The normal hill competition was already lost for the Poles after the first round, the disaster was near. Neither Dawid Kubacki nor Kamil Stoch believed in their chances to win a medal after their jumps in the first round. Then it got more and more exciting with every jump, maybe it would be enough for them. The joy of the Polish team was huge after the totally unexpected 1-2 finish.

The discovery - Kilian Peier: The Swiss enthused his team with his bronze medal in the large hill event in Innsbruck. Peier made huge progress during the course of the last couple of months and he has great potential. Simon Ammann played an important role in achieving this success. Ammann somehow refused to retire before a successor is found. Peier is now capable of following in the footsteps of Ammann.

The queen - Maren Lundby: The Norwegian is the outstanding athlete in ladies' Ski Jumping this winter. The great Katharina Althaus, who came in second close behind Lundby in the ladies' competition, has to recognize that.

The team - The German ladies: The German ladies are an extremely strong team and could live up to the expectations in the team competition. They won the first ever ladies' team competition - great performance.

In the shadow - Karl Geiger: Karl Geiger has a great character. He will return home to Oberstdorf with two gold medals and one silver medal (team men, mixed team and individual LH). Everyone still remembers how he celebrated the jump of his teammate Markus Eisenbichler who has just defeated him in the fight for the World Championship title. There's still a team spirit in Ski Jumping that has been lost in many other sports - amazing to watch.

And then there was the net on the Bergisel in Innsbruck:
Even before the first medal event of the WSC was held, young Norwegian Thomas Aasen Markeng provided a topic of conversation with his spectacular crash. Fortunately, the Junior World Champion didnÄt suffer any injuries and was able to show top performances during the course of the WSC.

In order to guarantee the safety of the journalists, a safety was installed but already during the training session of the Nordic Combined athletes the next morning, the ski of an athlete got out of control and got dangerously close to a journalist. Nobody was injured and the net was not necessary during the competitions. Everything went well.

The results of Seefeld:
Men individual large hill
Men team
Ladies team
