Hofmeister and Baumeister win team event as World Cup season wraps up in Berchtesgaden

The second of back-to-back competitions scheduled for this weekend in Berchtesgaden (GER) went down in a big way on Sunday, as Ramona Theresia Hofmeister and Stefan Baumeister wrapped un the 2021/22 FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup season with an outstanding win for the home German squad, while second on the day Austria’s Sabine Schoeffmann and Alexander Payer won the overall team classification and capped off the season with crystal globes in their hands.
Straight from Saturday’s individual event that saw Julie Zogg (SUI) and Andreas Prommegger (AUT) walk away with victories and PSL World Cup titles, while Hofmeister and Sangho Lee claimed the parallel overall crystal globes, the world’s best athletes were back in racing mode on Sunday for what was another prime display of top-level snowboarding in a thrilling team competition format.
And after another intensive day of racing on the challenging slope in Berchtesgaden, it was Ramona Theresia Hofmeister and Stefan Baumeister, who stormed their way through to take a crowd-pleasing win on home soil in Berchtesgaden.
On Sunday Hofmeister and Baumeister raced against the likes of Switzerland’s Jessica Seiser and Gian Casanova as well as Julie Zogg and Dario Caviezel, Canada’s Megan Farrell and Arnaud Gaudet, and finally the Austrian duo of Sabine Schoeffmann and Alexander Payer.
And the big final delivered exactly what everyone was hoping for - pure action from start to finish. Dropping in first, both Baumeister and Payer came with strong efforts and went head-to-head before the German rider stepped things up in the bottom part of the course, finishing men’s race with .37 second advantage over his rival.
That left all in hands of Hofmeister and Schoeffmann dropping in for the final matchup of 2021/22 World Cup season. And while Schoeffmann did everything to close the gap, it wasn’t enough to really challenge Hofmeister as the 2021/22 PGS and parallel overall World Cup champion would cross the finish line .09 seconds ahead of Schoeffmann, earning Baumeister and herself a well-deserved victory.
With Hofmeister and Baumeister on top, Schoeffmann and Payer had to settle for second place on the day, while Italy’s Elisa Laffont and Maurizio Bormolini rounded out the podium in third place, after edging out Canada’s Megan Farrell and Arnaud Gaudet in the small final.
With Sunday’s race in Berchtesgaden acting as the final team competition in the season, Schoeffmann and Payer claimed the season’s top World Cup honours by taking home the parallel team crystal globes.
On the strength of one victory, one second and one third place in 2021/22, Schoeffmann and Payer topped the team standing with 280 points. Julia Dujmovits and Arivd Auner finished the season in second place with 235 points, while Daniela Ulbing and Benjamin Karl completed an all-Austrian in third with 184 points.
The snowboard alpine Nations Cup went to Team Austria, which dominated the 2021/22 World Cup season, leading the standings with a total score of 3346 points and more than 1000 points ahead of second in the ranking Team Italy.
